Vikings Fans Turn on J.J. McCarthy After Kyler Murray Comments
The Minnesota Vikings brought in two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray to seemingly replace third-year QB J.J. McCarthy - or at the very least mentor him.
The two are expected to battle it out in one of the hottest QB competitions of the summer, and Vikings fans got a little taste of the tension between the signal-callers Thursday during OTAs.
Murry and McCarthy were asked about their relationship with one another, and both gave vastly different answers.
"It's been great," Murray said. "Obviously, I know he's a younger guy, so I can help him. I've played seven years going on eight, so I'm considered a veteran even though I don't see myself as that. [I can] give him any knowledge that he needs. Again, we're both competitors, and I know we both want what's best for the team."
"It's just like two guys in a classroom," McCarthy replied. "He sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it's the coach's responsibility to teach us and coach us. Awkwardness? It's just like the same feeling when you're in high school and there's another person on the other side of the room that's just kind of how it is, so I wouldn't say there's any awkwardness."
Murray's response was as expected, but McCarthy's caught some by surprise.
His comments only underscored what most already knew: McCarthy is salty about losing his job to another former first-round pick - and what he said seemingly turned quite a few Vikings fans against him.
"You can’t suck and also behave like an [expletive] to your teammate. McCarthy won’t last much longer in the NFL," one fan replied.
"I’m calling it now [McCarthy] will get released and sign as a backup with the Chargers where Harbaugh is," another sated.
"Insane answer by JJ. Genuinely what is he thinking here?" asked a third fan.
"JJ the first player to make Kyler look like a mature person. 😂😂😂," one user quipped.
"The maturity difference between @K1 and @jjmccarthy09 is obvious in their response to one question. Yeah. Kyler Murray is QB1 on week 1. I don't see it any other way. McCarthy has a lot of learning to do, pay your dues young fella," remarked another user.
"McCarthy is a juvenile and should not be leading any franchise at QB…what a douchebag," one fan scoffed.
"This guy might be one of the biggest idiots in the league. Dude was a handoff/skill players merchant at Michigan and got lucky Vikings took a chance on him (they are [expletives] for doing so). He can't sniff Kyler's jock and will be out of the league in a year. [Expletive] QB/teammate," another fan exclaimed.
