State Tennis: Lucas Walburn of Columbia River, doubles team Brody Wolski and Eli Miller of Ridgefield advance to 2A semifinals
May 22-Columbia River senior Lucas Walburn remains on target to defend his Class 2A boys tennis singles title.
But not without a battle in the quarterfinals on Friday in Seattle.
After a 6-2, 6-3 win the first round against Yahann Doshi of Selah, Walburn faced Sehome's Harley Kaiser, a player he beat in straight sets in last year's semifinals, and lost the first set 6-2.
Walburn turned the match around to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-0 and advance to Saturday's semifinal at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus.
Next up is Nathan Hale senior Fletcher Grant, who was 0-2 at state last year.
Also into the 2A state semifinals is Ridgefield's doubles team of seniors Brody Wolski and Eli Miller. And like Walburn, the Spudders' team had to recover from a one-sided first-set loss in their quarterfinal.
Eli Warner and Lucian Headley, first-time state qualifiers from Bremerton, took the first set from the Ridgefield pair 6-1. But Wolski and Miller also turned the match around to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4.
Wolski and Miller will take on North Kitsap's team of junior Grady DeVries and senior Rocco Targett of North Kitsap in Saturday's semifinal. DeVries placed third in doubles last year with a different partner.
In the 2A girls tournament at Seattle, last year's runner up in singles, Columbia River junior Jenny Serebriakova was beaten in the quarterfinals by Hailey Brooks of Lynden 6-0, 6-0. Brooks won the 2A doubles title last year.
Serebriakova had won her first match over Olivia Harris of Othello 6-0, 6-0.
River's double team of Annie Morgan and Sydney Walburn reached the quarterfinals but lost 6-0, 6-2.
4A at Kennewick
Camas senior Leo Zhao lasted the longest of the 4A Greater St. Helens League players, but was eliminated with a second loss in the consolation round.
Defending 4A state champion Adrian Martin of Issaquah became the downfall of Zhao and Camas teammate Dylan Siems. Martin beat Zhao in the first round 6-1, 6-0, and then topped Siems in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-1. Siems had advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 first-round win over Levi Seslar of Kamiak.
Skyview's Issac Patel and Anton Patel, and Union's Joseph Wei and Daniel Tsay all went 0-2 in doubles.
Skyview junior Annie Sheppert stayed alive in girls singles by winner two consolation matches after a first-round loss. She will play for fifth place Saturday against Lily Deng of Hanford.
3A at Vancouver Tennis Center
The local players didn't last long. Micah Nelson of Prairie and Victor Simal of Mountain View were eliminated in two matches.
Same for Mountain View's two doubles teams of Jackson Taylor and Owen Kendrick, and Caleb Sears and Austin Wick. Taylor and Kendrick aren't done completely. They are off to Kennewick where they will play for the Thunder's baseball team against O'Dea in the regional matchup.
A similar fate befell the 3A GSHL girls players as both singles and doubles were eliminated in two matches.
1A at Yakima
Carlotte Hayward of Fort Vancouver lost in the semifinals 6-0, 6-0 to Makenna Kim of Bush and plays Jojo Zhan of Annie Wright in the third-place semifinal on Saturday. Hayward won her quarterfinal against Za Monoick of Naches Valley 6-2, 6-3.
