Mark Morris softball took care of business, beating Nathan Hale 12-0 and Burlington-Edison 11-1 on Friday in the 2A State Fastpitch Softball Tournament at Carlon Park in Selah. The Monarchs advanced to the state semifinals for the second straight season.

Against the Tigers in the quarterfinals, the Monarchs hit four home runs, with two from Mikaila Warfield and one each from Makenzie Henthorn and Shailia Wild. Keira McGinley and Paisley Fraidenburg each had triples. Warfield also had a single and finished with six RBIs.

"Mikaila Warfield came through in second game," Mejia said. "She's been struggling recently, but she came through today when we really needed her."

Megan Fugleberg caught a line drive and connected with Shyanne Sellers at first base for a big double play in the first inning.

"Megan, she's been the heart and soul of my defense, but today, making a double play, catching that line drive, just a huge play for us to set the tone," Mejia said.

Henthorn struck out seven batters and gave up just two hits and 1 run in five innings of work in the circle. The run that she gave away was unearned, but the Monarchs had their 16-game shutout streak come to an end.

Against the Raiders in the opening game, Mark Morris had two home runs, with one each from Grace Woodbridge and Taylor Lee. McGinley, Fraidenburg, and Shyanne Sellers each hit triples while Fraidenburg and Fugleberg tallied doubles.

Henthorn generated 12 strikeouts and didn't give away any hits in four innings of pitching duty. Sellers came in for the final inning of relief and struck out two while giving up just one hit.

No. 1 Mark Morris (22-1) will face No. 5 Lynden in the state semifinals on Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m at Carlon Park. The Monarchs will look to advance to the state championship game after just missing out on making it last season following their 1-0 loss to Port Angeles in the semis.
