Caitlin Clark Confirms Stephanie White Has Challenged One Aspect of Her Game

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White wants to see the best out of Caitlin Clark. This is exactly why the veteran coach has challenged Clark to step it up on the defensive end.

Clark's efforts on both sides of the ball were on full display on Friday as the Fever took down the Golden State Valkyries in a home matchup at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, 90-82. The two-time WNBA All-Star finished with 22 points, nine assists and four triples, along with a steal and a block.

After the game, Clark was asked about how she dealt with foul trouble down the stretch. The Valkyries decided to attack her defense twice in the final minute as Clark played with five fouls. The 24-year-old showcased her defensive prowess by coming up with two crucial stops.

"Yeah, I think Steph has really challenged me on the defensive end," Clark revealed. "There's probably definitely a narrative about me not being a great defender, but I can guard. I'm long, I know angles, and I can get my hands out and be active.

"At the same time, they're probably putting me in those actions to make me tired. I bring the ball up 94 feet every single time - that's what they want to do. They want to tire you out."

Clark clearly stepped up to White's challenge on Friday night. The former Rookie of the Year shared her thought process during her two defensive stops down the stretch.

"You just have to sit down and guard, force them into tough twos, and I made [Kaitlyn] Chen take a couple tough shots - two on the left and one on the right," Clark said. "If she made them, good for her, but she didn't.

"We cleaned up the glass and were able to close it out."

That's exactly what the Fever did on Friday night as they showed their mettle against an unrelenting Valkyries side. Clark and Co. will need to do it all again on Thursday when they face Golden State in a rematch.

This time around, the Valkyries will play hosts at Chase Center, with tipoff scheduled for 10:00 p.m. ET.
