The Fever Are Getting Called Out For Handling Of Caitlin Clark's Situation
What's actually going on with Caitlin Clark?
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft didn't play on Wednesday night. Clark was ruled out just a couple of hours before tipoff. Clark is apparently dealing with a back injury, though the Fever say she's healthy.
So, which is it - an injury or a load management situation?
"I'm told it's part of a strategic management plan for the season," sports reporter Scott Agness wrote.
However, Fever head coach Stephanie White says it's not a load management issue.
"She's healthy. We're not managing anything. This is just a back issue that we want to make sure we give the time to be ready."
But what's actually going on?
Amid all of the confusion, the Indiana Fever are getting called out by members of the sports media world.
Transparency is needed.
Fever facing blowback for Caitlin Clark situation
Christine Brennan, who covers the league for the WNBA, called out the Fever.
"The story of the Fever and Caitlin Clark is simple. She is more than a basketball player. She is an entertainer. People pay to see her like she's the star of a Broadway show or it's her concert. This means honesty and transparency are crucial, especially with attendance dropping," she wrote.
Gregg Doyel, who writes for the Indy Star, also urged transparency.
"The Caitlin Clark injury controversy is another example of the perfect media storm we're watching. And we're watching it swamp the Fever," he wrote.
WNBA fans are in agreement.
"This team had my goodwill and understanding last year, but with recent events, coaches pulling at Caitlin, shouting at her on the sideline, and a head coach unable to give her simple warranted praise when asked I have little patience for this organization," one fan wrote.
"I don't think we've ever seen a massive superstar mishandled the way the Fever have mishandled CC and it's beyond disheartening for us fans. And there's nothing we can do. They won't build the team around her. The system is supposed to favor her but doesn't seem that way," one fan added.
"It's not so much that we need to know exactly what's going on with Caitlin, it's the vague answers as opposed just saying we don't know we'll know again in a few days or I can't comment on this right now etc…" one fan added.
The Fever, meanwhile, will return to play on Friday night.
