Raiders' Update on Maxx Crosby Doesn't Match Earlier Statement

On March 10, the Baltimore Ravens backed out of a trade for Maxx Crosby after the defensive end failed a physical.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta received harsh criticism for backing out of the trade, as it was well known Crosby was coming off a surgery in January to repair a meniscus tear.

Crosby’s recovery doesn’t appear to track with what his agent, CJ LaBoy of Wasserman, suggested would occur during OTAs. On March 10, LaBoy released a statement that his client was “on track” to return for the offseason program this spring.

“Maxx continues to be on track in his recovery and if anything is ahead of schedule according to his surgeon Dr. Neal El Attrache,” LaBoy posted on X. “Maxx remains on track to return during the offseason program & will undoubtedly return as the dominant game wrecker he has been these past 7 seasons.”

On Wednesday, Crosby returned to the field to stretch with teammates but was held out for the rest of practice. Kubiak told reporters that the Raiders are “counting” on Crosby being available for training camp.

"Yeah, we do. That's the goal," Kubiak said of Crosby returning for training camp, via Pro Football Talk. "He's still the first one in this building every day, working. He's a leader on our team, and when he's out there, you feel his presence. And yes, we're counting on him being there for training camp, and I wouldn't be surprised if Maxx was ahead of schedule."

It’s unclear if Crosby or the Raiders see the star defensive end’s inability to practice at OTAs as a setback or not.

However, the change in the timeline suggests the Ravens might not have been entirely in the wrong by backing out of the trade after a team doctor performed the physical. The belief at the time of the trade was that Crosby would return for OTAs, which would have been crucial for first-year head coach Jesse Minter.

Crosby might return to full health by training camp and have another successful season with the Raiders, but his recovery was not ahead of schedule, per the thinking in early March.
