Prep Highlights: Addison Paul of Washougal among locals in contention at state golf tournaments
May 19-Addison Paul has a knack for finishing the high school golf season strong.
Tuesday, the Washougal sophomore put herself in contention after the first day at the Class 2A state championships at Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis.
Paul shot 3-over-par 75, putting her in second place heading into the tournament's final day. She sits two strokes behind Melia Cerenzia of West Valley-Spokane.
As a freshman, Paul finished sixth in state after placing third at the district tournament and fifth at the 2A Greater St. Helens League tournament.
This year, she's coming off another third-place finish at the district tournament after winning the 2A GSHL title.
Tuesday, Paul settled in after back-to-back bogeys to end the front nine at 2-over. She made eight pars on the back nine.
Columbia River senior Maia Carillo is in fourth place after shooting 7-over par. Washougal freshman Keira Newman is tied for sixth at 9-over.
4A Girls State Golf
It's anybody's tournament heading into Day 2 of the 4A girls state tournament.
Anybody could be India Schmidt. The Skyview freshman is one stroke off the lead after shooting 1-over 73 a the Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey.
Six golfers, however, are tied for the lead after shooting even-par 72.
Schmidt's round was highlighted by consecutive birdies on holes 8, 9 and 10, which had her at 2-under. A double-bogey on Hole 11 snapped that streak. She then logged pars on six of the last seven holes.
Schmidt is coming off winning the district championship on May 5 in Longview.
3A Girls State Golf
Reigning Class 3A state champion Alyssa Rigby is in fourth place after shooting 2-under 70 at the state tournament in Deer Park north of Spokane.
The Mountain View sophomore is five shots behind Bellevue's Tatum Otto, who leads by three shots after shooting a blistering 65.
Rigby was on that same pace when she birdied the par-4 Hole 12 to move to 4-under par. But bogeys on holes 14, 16 and 17 stemmed her momentum.
2A Boys State Golf
Trenton Maddox of Washougal and the Columbia River duo of Luke Potter and Owen Winn are all in the top four after Day 1 of the 2A state tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.
Maddox is in third place after shooting even-par 72, three shots behind leader Wyatt Brownell of Burlington-Edison. Potter and Winn are tied for fourth after both shot 73.
Winn and Maddox had an epic battle at the 2A district tournament last October. They needed five playoff holes before Winn prevailed.
1A Boys State Golf
Christian Harlow shot a bogey-free 2-under 70 in the first day of the 1A state tournament in Liberty Lake near Spokane.
The King's Way Christian freshman took advantage on holes 7 and 12, scoring birdies on both par 5s.
Harlow is in fourth place, four shots behind Justin Chen of The Bush School.
Harlow has the potential to go well under par on any day. He won the district title in the fall by shooting 11-under 61, the lowest round by any boy or girl statewide this season.
3A State Baseball
EASTSIDE CATHOLIC 6, KELSO 3, 8 innings - Jay Baxter pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief as Eastside Catholic rallied for two in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth in win a state round-of-20 game in Kelso.
Bryce Collins went 3 for 4 with two RBI as Kelso took a 3-0 lead into the sixth. He also pitched six solid innings.
But the Crusaders scored the tying run in the top of the seventh.
Collins led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and was sacrificed over to third base.
Eastside walked the next two batters to load the bases, but Baxter struck out the next two batters to end the rally.
