NBA Legend Magic Johnson Gives West Teams an Unfortunate Reality Check

Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson firmly believes the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs are going to dominate the NBA Western Conference for a long time.

Johnson said as much following Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals series between the Spurs and Thunder, which saw the former take a 122-115 victory in double overtime.

Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama had a monster showing, as he recorded 41 points, 24 rebounds and three blocks in 49 minutes of action.

Jalen Williams (26) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (24) combined for 50 points, while Alex Caruso tallied 31 points for the Thunder. Unfortunately, they couldn't find a way to slow down Wemby, resulting in their first loss in this year's playoffs.

Many were impressed by the incredible battle between the two teams, including Johnson who was convinced that no other West team could compete against the Spurs and Thunder for at least the next five years.

"I hate to break the news to the rest of the Western Conference, but they may not have a chance to win the Western Conference Finals for the next 5-7 years," Johnson wrote. "The Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs are just that good! They are talented, deep, athletic and both teams are well coached."

The NBA icon has a valid reason for his belief, though. After all, both the Spurs and Thunder have young cores.

Wembanyama is just 22 years old, while Stephon Castle is only 21. There's also rookie Dylan Harper, who is 20 years old but has been playing like an NBA veteran. It shouldn't be forgotten that the Spurs also have 28-year-old De'Aaron Fox.

As for the Thunder, Gilgeous-Alexander is only 27 but is already a two-time NBA MVP. Jalen Williams is 25, while Chet Holmgren is 24. They also have reliable younger players who can break out in the future, like 22-year-old Jared McCain and 23-year-old Ajay Mitchell.

It remains to be seen if other West teams will be able to catch up to the Spurs and Thunder in the future, but as things currently stand, the two teams are leagues above the rest of the conference.
