Husky women's track and field lands best finish at a conference championship since 1998

It was a successful weekend in Lincoln, Nebraska for the UW track and field squads.

The UW women's track and field team is returning home from the Big Ten outdoor championship meet with three individual titles and a fourth-place team finish after scoring the most points at a conference championship meet since 1998. The men earned a sixth-place finish and scored in every distance running event over the weekend.

Three-time NCAA pole vault champion Hana Moll broke her own NCAA record to win the pole vault on Friday. The junior took the bar to 15-10 (4.83m), going one inch higher than her previous NCAA Outdoor Record.

Moll's runner-up was none other than her twin Amanda Moll, who made 15-2 1/4. The sisters, who tied for sixth-place at the World Championships, hold the top two marks in the NCAA this outdoor season.

In addition to Moll, junior Ashley Schroeder and senior Chloe Thomas also took home individual titles in the javelin and 10K.

Schroeder was a surprise winner in the javelin, sitting in third place after three rounds with a best of 165-0. The next round, she moved into first going 179-6. In addition to being a career-best, the throw also broke Schroeder's own school record by four feet. The Huskies had a strong showing in the event, with Saydi Orange taking fourth place and Leonie Troeger taking fifth.

Thomas, a senior transfer from UConn, won Washington's first conference 10k title since 2019 on Friday with a time of 32:59.51. Close behind Thomas was her teammate Abby DeVeau, who placed third in her first career 10k race.

By the end of the weekend, the Huskies had collected six second-place finishes in addition to the three individual titles. The runners up on the men's side were senior Jimmy Rhoads in the pole vault and junior Reuben Reina in the 5k.

Reina missed out on the 5k title by just 0.15 seconds - and his performance came just a few hours after he placed fourth in the 1,500 meter final. Senior Julia David-Smith also had a close finish in the women's 5k race, placing second with a time of 16:58.99 that put her 0.25 seconds behind Oregon's Dalia Frias.

There was disappointment for the Huskies in the men's 400 m when junior Alex Rhodes, who is ranked top-10 nationally, took a tumble in the final.

The women finished the meet with 88 points and the men finished with 57 points. Oregon took first place in both men's and women's.

Up next for the Huskies are the NCAA West Preliminaries which begin on May 27 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
