Tumwater boys, girls win Evergreen Sub-District titles

May 14-Led by 11 event winners, the Tumwater boys and girls track and field teams both won league titles on Thursday, finishing on top at the Evergreen Sub-Districts.

The Thunderbird girls dominated the short distance races, as Ashlyn Hufana, Ava Bunn, and Alexandra Broome won the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter race, respectively.

Hufana ran the 100 in 12.75 seconds, Bunn clocked a 28.07 in the 200, and Broome finished the 400 in 59.52 seconds.

W.F. West's Joy Cushman picked up a victory in the 800, clocking a 2:27.02.

Tumwater's Cassidy Hedin won the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 48.89 seconds, .99 seconds faster than teammate Emery Schmidt, who finished in second in that race.

The Tumwater girls also won both relay races. Abigail Kummer, Hedin, Amahle Foster, and Hufana ran the 4x100 in 49.52 seconds, and Foster, Hufana, Broome, and Hedin ran the 4x200 in 1:47.39, more than 12 seconds faster than the runner-up.

On the boys side, Tumwater's Blake Kirkpatrick picked up a win in the 100 with a time of 11.08 seconds, and Centralia's Ethan Weiher won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:44.32.

W.F. West won both hurdles on the boys side, as Maddox Sampson won the 110 with a time of 15.31 seconds, and Hayden Niemi won the 300 with a time of 40.72 seconds, just .05 seconds faster than Aberdeen's Adonis Hammonds.

Tumwater's success on the girls side carried over into the field events, where the T-Birds won three of the four field events.

Abigail Krause won the discus with a toss of 106 feet, nine inches, Wendy Ferrell won pole vault by clearing the bar at nine feet, and Hufana won the long jump with a leap of 16-10.50.

The field events on the boys side were more evenly split.

Centralia picked up two wins, as Sam Volavola won the shot put with a throw of 55-7.5 inches, and he won the discus with a throw of 169-2.

W.F. West's Peyton Santiago won the javelin with a heave of 171-6 and fellow Bearcat Mason Ruiz won the pole vault by clearing the bar at 12-6.

Tumwater's Owen Reamer picked up a win in the high jump by leaping over the bar at six-feet even.

Next up for the EvCo teams is the 2A District 4 Championships, which are set for Thursday at W.F. West.
