Brittney Griner Injury Update: Sun Coach Addresses Unwanted Development

Brittney Griner has played in the Connecticut Sun's first two games of the WNBA season. The 10-time All-Star, however, is out of action for Wednesday's matchup against the defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces.

Griner was ruled out of Wednesday's contest due to a foot injury. This marks the 35-year-old's first missed game for her new team after Griner joined Connecticut in free agency. The two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year signed a one-year, $1.19 million contract with the Sun during the offseason.

Connecticut head coach Rachid Meziane spoke to reporters ahead of the Aces game to address the unwanted development on Griner's injury. According to the second-year coach, Griner has a sprained toe, via Sun reporter Emily Adams on X.

Meziane also added that Griner herself stated when she plans to come back. "She says that she will play the next game," Meziane relayed.

The Sun will be back on the court on Friday in a rematch against the Aces. They will host A'ja Wilson and Co. again in a home matchup at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Griner has had a strong start for her new team. She's averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 27.5 minutes per contest.

The Sun, however, have started the campaign 0-2. They got blown out by the New York Liberty in their season-opener on Friday, 106-75. This was followed by a 89-82 home loss to the Seattle Storm on Sunday.

Connecticut is looking to have a more productive campaign in 2026 after it finished 11th in the WNBA last season with an 11-33 record. Griner's production will be pivotal in the Sun's plans this year.
