Prep baseball, softball postseason roundup: College Place advances to 1A district title game, secures state berth

The College Place softball team soared to a state berth and spot in the upcoming Class 1A District 5 championship game with a pair of wins Saturday at the Mill Creek Sports Park.

The top-seeded Hawks started the postseason with a 21-0 win over No. 8 Cascade of Leavenworth before holding off No. 5 Kiona-Benton 8-7 to reach Wednesday's title game against No. 7 Naches Valley on Wednesday at Yakima's Kiwanis Park.

Carli Ray went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs and four RBI to pace College Place in its blowout of Cascade, and Anna Ortega struck out 11 as the Hawks (21-2) held on in their district semifinal.

In baseball, after winning a 3A District 6 play-in on Thursday, the No. 9 Blue Devils lost their first-round game to No. 1 University 9-2 on Saturday. Wa-Hi (7-15) will face elimination at No. 5 Ridgeline on Saturday.

College Place's season ended with a 1-0 loss at Royal in the 1A District 5 tournament. The Hawks finished with a record of 8-14.

In the 1B District 6 tournament, Dayton won its third-place game while DeSales played its way to a state berth.

Jordan McCowen hit a two-RBI triple and Colton Steinhoff scored the go-ahead run on a sixth-inning William Cranmer single as the Bulldogs beat Oroville 7-6 at Colfax.

Facing elimination, Sam Kolb powered last year's 1B runner-up with a complete game effort on the mound, striking out 18 over seven one-hit innings, and tripling twice at the plate as the Irish beat Waterville-Mansfield 5-1 at Ritzville.

Dayton (17-3-1) and DeSales (10-9) will learn their state seeding when brackets are released Sunday.
