Girls Golf: India Schmidt of Skyview beats nerves to win 4A District title by one shot

May 5-LONGVIEW - India Schmidt of Skyview had a little case of the first-time district tournament jitters.

It's understandable for a freshman.

But Schmidt finished Tuesday's round like a veteran, rallying past Reese Reiter of Camas to win the 4A District 4 girls golf tournament at Mint Valley Golf Course by one shot.

"It feels amazing," Schmidt said. "I was pretty nervous, but it was fun."

Schmidt opened Tuesday's second round in second place, three shots behind first-round leader Reiter.

Her position didn't improve much after three bogeys and two double-bogeys on the front nine Tuesday.

Reiter had her own stumbles on the front nine and only extended her advantage to four shots at the turn.

But Schmidt reeled off seven consecutive pars on the back nine while Reiter had three bogeys before a double-bogey on No. 15 gave Schmidt a one-shot lead.

"I was just trying to take it swing by swing," Schmidt said. "The front nine wasn't very good for me, so I just knew I had to make up the strokes."

Schmidt's par on No. 16 extended her lead to two shots, but Reiter was able to get one shot back on No. 17.

On No. 18, both Schmidt and Reiter reached the par-4 green in two shots. Reiter's birdie attempt ran past the hole. Her par putt lipped out of the cup, giving Schmidt a little more cushion.

"I was just trying to put myself in good position," Schmidt said. "Hit a good drive, get on and two-putt. And I just knew I couldn't lose that hole."

Schmidt also three-putted, but that was enough for a one-shot win.

Camas claimed the team title, led by Reiter and Natalie Chill, who finished in a three-way tie for third. Skyview was second, 12 shots back.

Golfers next move onto the 4A bi-district tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma.
