What Happens If Wrexham Win, Lose or Draw vs Middlesbrough? EFL Play-Off Qualification Explained
Wrexham enters the final day of the 2025–26 EFL Championship season in 6th place with 70 points. Their play-off fate depends on matching or bettering the results of Hull City (70 points) and Derby County (69 points)
Phil Parkinson's squad are coming off a loss against champions Coventry City but will be encouraged by a solid home record where they have maintained 10 wins, 6 draws, and 6 losses.
While Middlesbrough has already secured their own playoff spot, they remain a formidable opponent and still have a mathematical chance at automatic promotion, but depending on other results.
What Happens If Wrexham Win, Lose or Draw vs Middlesbrough?
If Wrexham hold onto their position, they will enter a four-team playoff for the final promotion spot to the Premier League. For owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, it would be the latest chapter in a fairy-tale rise through the English football pyramid.
- If Wrexham Wins:
The Outcome: They will likely secure the 6th spot. If Hull City also wins, Wrexham must maintain their superior goal difference. They currently lead Hull by +1 (Wrexham +4 vs. Hull +3). If Hull wins by a larger margin, Wrexham could still be overtaken on goal difference or total goals scored.
- If Wrexham Draws:
The Outcome: They can still finish 6th, but they need help. Wrexham must hope Hull City does not win against Norwich and Derby County does not win against Sheffield United. If either of those teams wins, Wrexham will fall out of the playoff spots.
- If Wrexham Loses:
The Outcome: Their playoff hopes are in serious danger. They only stay in 6th if both Hull and Derby also lose. If Derby draws, they would overtake Wrexham on goal difference (+9 vs. Wrexham's +3 or lower). If Hull draws, they would overtake Wrexham on points (71 vs. 70).
Scenario | Result for Wrexham | Dependency |
Win | Likely Qualify | Qualify as long as Hull doesn't win by a much bigger score. |
Draw | Nervous Wait | Need both Hull and Derby to fail to win. |
Loss | Unlikely | Need both Hull and Derby to lose as well. |
