JC Alexander named Hudson's Bay boys basketball coach after 9 seasons at Mountain View
May 1-A new chapter is beginning for JC Alexander - and for Hudson's Bay High School boys basketball.
After nine seasons leading Mountain View's program, including a Class 3A state appearance this past winter, Alexander accepted the head coaching position at Hudson's Bay earlier this week.
A 2004 Mountain View graduate, Alexander said Thursday the decision to leave the Thunder wasn't easy. Two key factors ultimately shaped Alexander's choice, he said: being able to coach in the same building he teaches in, and the opportunity the new coaching position provides to be more present for his 11-year-old son.
"The energy and effort I have to pour into both buildings," Alexander said of teaching at one school and coaching at another, "it doesn't leave me time for my son at night."
Alexander has taught special education at Hudson's Bay for the past five years, during which time he has seen multiple head coaches lead the boys basketball program. While the Eagles have struggled in recent seasons - not winning more than five games in a season since 2017-18 - Alexander sees opportunity that he calls "untapped potential."
"I think it's a basketball community that's thriving for structure and organization," he said, "and somebody who wants to be here."
Alexander brings a track record of program-building. Prior to Mountain View, he helped turn around Parkrose High School in Oregon during a three-year stint. When he took over at Mountain View in 2017, the Thunder had won a combined 16 games over the previous four seasons.
Over the past five years, Mountain View won 62 games, reached the playoffs four times and made two Class 3A state appearances. This past season's 16-8 record marked the program's highest win total since 2012-13.
"I'm going to miss (Mountain View), but I really am truly excited," Alexander said. "It's bittersweet, but the (Hudson's Bay) community needs this."
