Mitchell Robinson, Dyson Daniels Bracing for Punishments for Knicks-Hawks Scrap

Thursday night brought a Game 6 must-win home game for the Atlanta Hawks against the New York Knicks, where tempers flared after the visitors came out hot from the gates and built a seemingly insurmountable lead.

In the second quarter, the Knicks were up by as much as 50 points on the home team. With that sort of lead staring at the Hawks, Dyson Daniels gave an extra elbow jab trying to box out Mitchell Robinson for the rebound as players were at the free throw line.

The two players ended up mostly talking trash and in a series of hugs with other players, referees, security, and staff coming over to try to intervene. According to the commentators, Robinson kept trying to go back after someone from the Hawks as things got close to the front row of fans near the sidelines.

Once the players were apart, the referees took some time to review what had occurred. Once they had finished their review, they issued technical fouls to both Robinson and Daniels. Both players received ejections from the game in the second quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Knicks were leading 127-75, in what is a jaw-dropping NBA Playoffs score. Barring any historic second-half comeback, the Knicks were well on their way to the second round, while Daniels and the Hawks’ postseason will end.

Following the scuffle and ejections, the NBA could review the altercation for further punishments. There have been more than a few fines handed out during the first round of this year’s postseason, including on-court scuffles and questioning the referees.

One happened recently between the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves. Following a late-game spat involving the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic and the Timberwolves’ Julius Randle, both players received fines.

Jokic received a $50,000 fine for his involvement in a confrontation near the end of the game, while Randle received a $35,000 fine for escalating things.

Something similar could be on the way for Daniels and Robinson. Neither player threw any punches, so there is unlikely to be any suspensions, which would certainly hurt Robinson and the Knicks more than it would hurt Daniels and the vacationing Hawks.
