Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg Opens Up on His "Welcome to the League" Moment

Cooper Flagg may have ended his first NBA season as Rookie of the Year, but even he had a moment where the league made him feel like a rookie. Looking back on his first real "welcome to the league" experience, Flagg pointed to Game 1 against Victor Wembanyama, a matchup that immediately showed him how different life in the NBA can be.

Wemby came out doing a bit of everything, throwing down dunks, stepping out for threes, and using his size in a way that is almost impossible to prepare for. For Flagg, it was one of those early moments where the hype, the speed, and the talent of the NBA all hit at once.

In a recent interview, Flagg was asked about his ‘Welcome to the league' moment. The 19-year-old had his answer ready without any hesitation saying, "Being matched up with Victor was a different experience. He came out dunking from everywhere on the court, hitting step back 3s. It was definitely one of those moments for sure."

Cooper Flagg Could Not Have Had a Better Start to Life in the NBA

The race itself was about as tight as everyone expected. Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel spent much of the season going back and forth, not just on the court but in the conversation around the award. Both had real cases, which made the final result feel less like a formality and more like the end of a season-long debate.

Flagg's argument was built around how much he had to carry in Dallas. Even with the Mavericks struggling, he was the one consistently filling up the box score and setting the tone. Leading his team in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals as a rookie put him in rare company, and his late-season explosion probably gave voters one final reminder of just how special his year had been.

That closing stretch was hard to ignore. Flagg dropped 51 points against Orlando, becoming the youngest player to ever hit the 50-point mark in an NBA game. He had already scored 49 earlier in the season, so this was not exactly coming out of nowhere.

Knueppel, though, made it a real fight. He was a huge part of Charlotte's turnaround, helped push the Hornets into the play-in picture, and had a ridiculous shooting season from deep. Leading the league in made threes as a rookie is not normal.

The final voting reflected that. Flagg won by just 26 points, making it one of the closest Rookie of the Year races in recent memory.
