Heat President Pat Riley Makes Statement Amid Retirement Rumors
The Miami Heat finished the 2025-26 NBA season above .500 but were the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference.
That meant they had to face the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA Play-In Tournament, and the Heat suffered a crushing 127-126 loss in overtime as LaMelo Ball hit the game-winner with five seconds remaining.
So, it's another early exit for the Heat, and questions swirled about whether or not Heat President Pat Riley would retire.
Riley, who turned 81 years old in March, was the long-time head coach for the Heat before becoming the team president full-time in 2008.
However, Riley insists he isn't ready to retire.
"I'm not going to retire. I'm not going to resign. I'm not going to step aside. ... I have the same attitude as I had in that press conference on the Imagination, period. I want another parade down Biscayne Boulevard. It may come. It may not," Riley said, via Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press.
Riley then went on to say that he is "pissed" and "disappointed" with the way things have gone lately in Miami.
Pat on the last four years: "I'm really pissed. I'm disappointed. Disgruntled, just like everybody else in the organization is that understands what we're about. We're about winning."

Since the 2020 NBA postseason, the Heat have made the NBA Finals twice, losing both times. They have also lost in the Eastern Conference Finals once and have three first-round exits, including two straight entering the 2025-26 campaign.
Heat Will be Aggressive This Summer
The Heat were linked to a potential trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and it seems that every season, Miami is considered a potential option for big names in the trade market and free agency.
Going into the summer, that should be the case once again.
Riley said the heat will be "aggressive as hell" and have more flexibility to work with this summer, via Tim Reynolds.
"We have more flexibility. We have more assets. We have taken away the conundrum of the new tax/cap/first/second apron. If you move past those aprons and you're stuck and you can't get out, it becomes very punitive. It took a lot of thought on our part," Riley added.
Who the Heat target or what the plan is remains to be seen, but Riley will be trying to do whatever it takes to get this franchise back into the top half of the Eastern Conference.
