Weston-McEwen boys claim team title at McLoughlin's 90th Carnival of Speed

MILTON-FREEWATER - Weston-McEwen's boys and Joseph's girls garnered team titles at McLoughlin High School's 90th annual Carnival of Speed track and field meet on Friday, April 24, at Shockman Field.

The TigerScots amassed 107 points on their way to the championship. Defending champion Pendleton finished second with 92 points.

Enterprise placed third (60), Umatilla took fourth (56) and Union went home fifth (55).

Joseph outpointed Pendleton, 94.33-78.67, in the girls competition. Enterprise was next in the team standings (63), Union was fourth (53), and Weston-McEwen tied for fifth place (49).

The DeSales boys (sixth) and Dayton girls (eighth) cracked the top 10.

Union's Jackson Davenport was the high-point male for the meet and the girl's top performance was turned in by Hazel Case of Pendleton. Davenport won the 110 and 300 hurdles (15.4 and 41.03 seconds), was second in the pole vault (12 feet), and third in the 100 (11.15).

Case was first in the 100 (12.77) and long jump (16-2), was second in the 200 (27.03), and ran a leg on the runner-up 4x100 relay team (52.19). Davenport accounted for 34 points on the day and Case had 30.

Wyatt Parsons led the Weston-McEwen boys by winning both the 100 (with a Shockman Field record 10.74) and the long jump (19-9.5), and joined Tristan Weseman, Logan Ray, and Colby Perkins to win the boys 4x100 in school-record and Oregon 2A-best fashion (44.0).

Jace Dunlap won the shot put (47-7). Weseman was second in the high jump (5-10) and long jump (19-7), and fourth in the 200 (23.02), and Ray was third in the triple jump (38-8.5).

Arden Shaul finished third in the 1500 (4:14.03) and fourth in the 3000 (9:38.69), and Perkins was fourth in the long jump (19-1). Dayton Monaco took fourth in the high jump (5-8).

Sydney Carey was second in the girls shot put (32-2) and TigerScot teammate Addy Hall was second in the 100 hurdles (16.81) and third in the 100 (12.97). Hall, Charlotte Hansell, Brooklyn Parker, and Bree Perkins were third in the 4x100 relay (52.32).

Hansell and Mylie Garrett finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (51.75) and discus (86-1), respectively, and Elsie Sprenger was fifth in the discus (83-6).

"Overall, the kids did great," W-M coach Loran Monaco said. "I don't remember bringing a boys team over here and winning the 4x100. This is not an easy place to win. We got quality efforts. Every day is a great day for track and field."

Jason Guest helped lead the DeSales boys to a sixth-place team finish. He was second in the 110 hurdles (15.71) and 300 hurdles (41.88).

Guest, Dominic Fazzari, Uriah Raymond, and Casen McGhan-Kezele were fourth in the 4x100 (46.29). Guest, Fazzari, Raymond, and Mathew Scott were fourth in the 4x400 (3:42.70).

Fazzari was third in the 800 (2:09.89) and Raymond finished fifth in the 100 (11.43).

Adri Caso had DeSales' best girls showing with a third in the 800 (2:32.98). Hadley Block was fifth in the 3000 (12:14.52).

"It was a good day with awesome weather," DeSales coach Bowe Ebding said. "It was great to compete against these bigger schools to see where we stack up."

Rosemary Yutzy paced the Dayton girls with seconds in the 400 (1:00.47) and 300 hurdles (49.43). Yutzy, Rilee Steinhoff, Ellie Sabin, and McKenna McCowen were fourth in the 4x100 relay (52.50).

Steinhoff was fifth in the 100 (13.45), long jump (15-3.5), and triple jump (31-5.5).

"It was an exceptional day," Dayton coach Owen Lanning said. "We have a small unit (of athletes), but they did pretty well. They had their best meet of the year. It's a talented group that you'll find once in a lifetime at a small school. You couldn't ask for a nicer, hard-working group. I'm proud of them."

Miley Rhoads highlighted Mac-Hi's day with a win in the javelin (121-1). Daisy Koklich was fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.57) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (51.83). The Pioneers' Christian Sandoval finished fifth in the boys javelin (142-2).

"We had so many (personal records)," Mac-Hi coach Pam Milleson said. "Our kids did great. We had some kids missing (due to sickness), but they should be well by next week."

Walla Walla Valley Academy's girls team claimed two fourth-place performances on the day compliments of Ava Cooper in the shot put (31-9.5) and Natalie Pearson in the long jump (15-5).
