Spurs Get Encouraging Victor Wembanyama Update

San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama suffered a head injury during the second quarter of Tuesday night’s Game 2 loss against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Wembanyama smacked his face on the floor after a hard fall on the way to the basket. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman appeared to be briefly knocked unconscious before sitting up dazed on the court at San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center. He stood up and ran straight back into the locker room, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Wembanyama is now working through the NBA‘s concussion protocol as his team prepares for Game 3 in Portland.

There was initially some doubt regarding Wembanyama’s travel to Portland for Friday night’s game. But on Thursday, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania confirmed that he will fly with the team as they make their trip out west.

According to NBA rule, a player cannot return to full activity until at least 48 hours after a diagnosed concussion. However, a player can resume limited activity after 24 hours as long as their concussion symptoms don’t worsen.

Wembanyama participated in cardio activity on Wednesday night, indicating that he’s trending in the right direction.

While Wembanyama is ramping up activity and traveling with the Spurs to Portland, that doesn’t mean he’ll be cleared to play in Game 3. The MVP candidate still needs to hit several symptom-free benchmarks and get cleared by the NBA protocol director.

The Spurs-Trail Blazers series is tied up at 1-1 after Tuesday night’s 106-103 win for Portland. In San Antonio’s Game 1 victory, Wembanyama recorded 35 points.

Game 3 will tipoff at 10:30 p.m. ET on Friday, roughly 72 hours after Wembanyama suffered his concussion.
