College Football Fans Not Happy With Push To Change Playoff

Talks are reportedly taking place over a significant College Football Playoff expansion.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported that a White House-backed presidential media committee pitched a CFP expansion to 24 teams to generate more revenue. The 14-person committee consists of conference commissioners, political strategists, and executives from ESPN and Fox.

Furthermore, a member of both the presidential and CFP governance committee said both groups are "coalescing" around a 24-team postseason.

"The growing support for a 24-team playoff not only exists among those presidential committee members working outside of college athletics," Dellenger wrote. "During last week's meeting, at least three of the four power conference commissioners, and Notre Dame, expressed outright support for, or at the very least an openness to deeply explore, a 24-team proposal."

College football fans aren't enthused about a 24-team College Football Playoff, and they don't like the idea of a presidential committee having a say. However, some think it's only a matter of time before more spots are added to the fold.

"Terrible idea," Caleb Taylor of 1819 News declared.

"Expansion is inevitable," iTalkSEC's Scott Moore said. "I hate it but conference championship games will be all but finished in 2027."

"A White House committee has no business even being mentioned in the College Football Playoff picture," TJ Salomone wrote.

"24 teams definitely makes the regular season meaningless," a fan said.

"One thing everyone always says: 'Man I would love for the American government, who already does so many things well, to get involved in College football,'" a fan said sarcastically.

More on potential CFP expansion

College football already saw a major CFP boost when the bracket multiplied from four to 12 teams in 2024. The postseason will stay at a dozen next season, but it could be a matter of time before the pool expands again.

Dellenger noted that the presidential committee has no power to change the playoff. On the other hand, the SEC and Big Ten must approve any adjustments.

While the CFP committee has spent "a large chunk of time" discussing potential expansion during the annual spring meetings, no decision is expected this week in Dallas.
