4A GSHL Baseball: Tanner Carlsen strikes out 13 as Skyview beats Battle Ground 6-0
The prospects for the Skyview baseball team entering the second week of 4A Greater St. Helens League play didn't look great on Monday.
The Storm opened league last week by dropping three tight games to Union.
Then, the Week 2 schedule had Skyview facing No. 1 Battle Ground.
But the Storm responded, putting up four runs in the top of the first inning, then letting junior pitcher Tanner Carlsen do the rest.
Carlsen stuck out 13 Tigers and allowed just one hit over six shutout innings in Skyview's 6-0 win over Battle Ground on Monday night.
"He's our Loyola Marymount guy," Skyview coach Avery Schmidt said of Carlsen. "He struggled early on in the year. But he's started to figure some things out. He's one of the hardest workers I've seen and been around. That's just all his hard work that is manifesting now. He was awesome."
Even before Carlsen took the mound, the Storm spotted him a four-run lead.
Charlie Steuben's infield single put Skyview on the board. Kalani Williams followed with a two-run and single before Izaiah Beitey's single made it 4-0.
"The first inning, the bats came out hot and set myself up for success," Carlsen said. "I was able to challenge the hitters, fill up the zone. And the defense around me made plays. I had confidence to throw strikes. It was a great game."
Schmidt said Carlsen's fastball set the tone from the start.
"His fastball was lively and had some carry to it, had some ride," Schmidt said. "I think they had one good swing off him in that first inning, then he kept them off-balance. But everything started with the fastball."
Steuben finished 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI, and Camden Jones was 2 for 4 as the Storm got hits from seven different batters to notch their first league win.
Battle Ground coach Seth Johnson said Monday's game just shows how competitive things are again in the 4A GSHL.
"This league has been like that forever," Johnson said. "Any team can beat any team on any day. ... The talent is usually pretty even. If one team comes ready to play and the other team does not, the team that's ready to play is going to be successful."
After an off day Tuesday, the Storm and Tigers will meet again this week on Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting.
"This is huge," Carlsen said. "It gives us the momentum. We know we've got a good ball club, and we can put it together when we need to. I'm excited for the rest of the week."
