Aliyah Boston Calls Liberty Roster ‘Nasty Work' After Satou Sabally Signing
The Las Vegas Aces retained their “Big 3” core of A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young.
The New York Liberty retained their “Big 3” core of Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones - and then added Satou Sabally on a multiyear deal in free agency last weekend.
The Aces have won three of the past four championships, with the lone exception being the Liberty beating Minnesota in the 2024 WNBA Finals to capture their first title in franchise history.
Indiana Fever star Aliyah Boston, who just received the richest contract in league history, has the Liberty circled heading into this season.
“That lineup is nasty work,” Boston said with a smile on her “Post Moves” podcast with Candace Parker. “Sabrina, Betnijah [Laney-Hamilton], Stewie, Satou, [Jonquel Jones].”
Parker interjected that she believes the Liberty will roll with Ionescu, Jones, Stewart, Sabally, and Leionie Fiebich as the starting five. Boston’s opinion was unchanged: “That’s still silly. It’s so silly!”
Parker asked whether the Liberty’s starting five is overwhelming defensively and offensively, or only on offense, and Boston said the Liberty will be “silly” on defense, too.
“It doesn’t have to be ridiculous,” Boston explained. “They have a lot of length. I mean, even if they’re not in the gaps, being able to come back and contest, they probably still can. We’ll see.”
Parker has questions about how well the Liberty will fare on defense, but no one doubts that New York is a top-tier contender.
In fact, after signing Sabally, the Liberty leapfrogged the Aces as the odds-on favorites to win the 2026 WNBA Finals. The Aces have the second-best odds, followed by Boston’s Fever, the Atlanta Dream - who recently acquired Angel Reese - and the Minnesota Lynx.
