North Carolina 'In The Hunt' For $1.1 Million Transfer Portal Recruit
The North Carolina Tar Heels are ushering in a new era after the hiring of Michael Malone. He brings a significant amount of experience, serving 12 seasons as an NBA head coach for the Sacramento Kings (two years) and Denver Nuggets (10 years). He went 510-394 in that time, even winning a championship with the Nuggets during the 2022-23 season.
Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, the coaching change has led to a handful of losses in the transfer portal. So far, they have lost nine players since it officially opened on April 7. However, Malone continues to work on replenishing the departed talent.
On3's Joe Tipton reports that North Carolina is one team to watch for former NC State Wolfpack guard Paul McNeil.
"Going back to NC State remains a strong option, however, other schools remain in the hunt, like North Carolina and Virginia Tech," Tipton wrote.
McNeil broke out during his sophomore season with NC State. He appeared in 34 games and made 32 starts, averaging 13.8 points (career-high), 3.6 rebounds (career-high) and 0.8 assists. He also shot 43.3% from the field and 42.7% from the three-point line.
His performance on the court has continued to raise his popularity, now sitting with an On3 NIL valuation of $1.1 million. That's tied for the 45th highest in college basketball.
While weighing his options, it's no surprise McNeil is garnering interest from a program as prominent as North Carolina. On3 Industry Rankings list him as the No. 23 player to hit the transfer portal this offseason.
If the Tar Heels can land his commitment, McNeil could be the team's second addition so far, joining guard Neoklis Avdalas (Virginia Tech Hokies).
