WNBA Confirms Sophie Cunningham News
Sophie Cunningham was an integral part of the Indiana Fever's success last season.
The 6-foot-1 guard immediately established herself as a key player following her offseason trade from the Phoenix Mercury, where she spent the first six seasons of her career. Cunningham was a threat from beyond the arc. She was a menace on the defensive end, making sure opponents recognized her physical presence.
In 30 games played before her season-ending knee injury, the former Missouri Tigers star averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.7 triples in 25.2 minutes per contest.
This is exactly why the Fever rewarded her with a new deal heading into 2026.
Cunningham officially signed a new contract with the Fever on Sunday. There was some uncertainty surrounding her future with the team during the offseason as she became an unrestricted free agent. In the end, however, she chose to remain in Indiana for at least one more season.
The WNBA confirmed the news on Tuesday. The league took to social media to officially announce that Cunningham had re-signed with the Fever. The 29-year-old also shared the announcement post via her Instagram stories.
It has been an eventful offseason for the Columbia, Missouri, native. Cunningham has been putting in the work in her rehab as she prepares to make her return to the court. The Fever guard has made significant progress in her recovery and is expected to be ready to start the new season.
Indiana's training camp will officially start on Sunday. They will play their first preseason game on April 25 against the New York Liberty.
The Fever will kick off their 2026 season on May 9 with a matchup against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.
