Richland High School will celebrate its state championship-winning basketball team and wrestler at a rally set for Wednesday, March 25, in the Art Dawald Gym.

The time has not been set yet, but will likely be held outside of regular school hours.

They also are expected to be honored at the March 24 school board meeting.

The boys team captured the WIAA 4A state title over the weekend, and bested a ferocious Gonzaga Prep team, 63-49.

Their shooting prowess also earned them a perfect season with 28 wins and no losses. The Bombers etched multiple school and Mid-Columbia Conference records along the way.

It’s the team’s first championship title since 1979.

Richland will also celebrate a remarkable first.

Senior Savannah Thorpe took home the belt in the 4A girls wrestling 115-pound class at last month’s Mat Classic.

She is the first Bomber to earn an individual state championship win.

Thorpe has served as team captain and the program’s leader three years running. Coaches say she set the standard both on and off the mat.

Booster says beware of merch

The Richland Bombers Booster Club is also cautioning fans about for-profit companies selling merchandise in the wake of the high school’s state win.

Targeted advertisements have gone up online showing Richland state gear, but the club says those private individuals are trying to cash in on the hype, and it’s not the right way to support local programs.

“Instead, support the real deal: The Richland Bomber Booster Club is designing and pre-selling official state championship shirts with shipping available nationwide,” the group said.

“We’re a registered 501c3 nonprofit, run by 100% volunteers who support ALL students at RHS – not just athletes! We also back our amazing educators and award higher education scholarships,” they said.
