Kamiakin boys, Richland girls earn Pasco Invitational track and field team titles

Kamiakin’s boys and Richland’s girls came away with team titles at the Pasco Invitational track and field meet Saturday.

Kamiakin used event victories by Devin Crews (110 high hurdles) and Ezra Teeples (1600 meters) to score 65 points.

Chiawana placed second with 61.5 points, while Rocky Mountain of Idaho finished third with 49.

Richland’s girls scored 59.83 points for the title, while Rocky Mountain (58.5 points) placed second and Kamiakin (51) was third.

For the Bombers girls, Naly Khamlue-Pratt crossed the finish line first in the 100 meters; and she teamed with Isabella Arroyo, Kearyn Elfering and Embry Law to win the girls 4x100 relay event. Their time of 48.39 seconds is the top time in the state.

Three other times or marks in the meet became tops in the state: Kamiakin’s Crews 14.02 seconds is No. 1 in the 110 high hurdles; Chiawana senior Braxton Feldmann fired the boys javelin 195 feet, 1 inch; and University’s Addy MacArthur became the state leader in the girls discus at 155 feet, 5 inches.

The top boys athletes of the meet:

  • Chiawana seniors Tristan Breier and Carter Kreutz: Kreutz and Breier finished 1-2 in the 400 meters, with Kreutz finishing in 49.68 seconds, and Breier in 49.69. The pair also teamed with Angel Colon and Cooper MacPherson to win the 4x100 relay event in 42.53 seconds; and Kreutz, Breier and Colon teamed up with Athen Harris to win the 4x400 relay event in 3:25.46. Breier also grabbed a third-place finish in the 100 final.
  • Kamiakin’s Crews: the Braves senior won the 110 hurdles final; then took second in the 300 finals with a time of 38.32 seconds.
  • Grandview senior Titus Jeffery: The Greyhound star won the shot put with a mark of 59 feet, 3.5 inches. He also placed second in the discus.
  • Ellensburg senior Colton Magruder, who won the 100 meters (10.73 seconds) and 200 meters (22.11 seconds).

The top five girls performers:

  • Kamiakin senior Aubrey Herrin. She and teammate Emaunii Smith each cleared 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump. But based off of jumps, Herrin earned the gold medal. She also won the triple jump with a mark of 39 feet, and 0.25 inches. Herrin also ran a leg on the Braves’ third-place 4x100 relay team.
  • Richland’s Khamlue-Pratt. The junior’s 11.94 seconds time won her the 100 meters event. That time was way faster than her top-qualifying mark of 12.23 seconds. She also placed second in the 200 meters. She also ran a leg in that top 4x100 relay team.
  • University’s MacArthur. Of course, she had that state-best mark in the discus event she won. But she also finished first in the shot put at 42 feet, 5.5 inches.
  • Mt. Spokane Makenna Ritter. The senior beat Khamlue-Pratt in the 200 meters final with a time of 25.02 seconds. Then she turned around and won the 400 meters in 56.65 seconds. Ritter also ran a leg on the Wildcats’ winning 4x400 relay team.
  • Bonney Lake’s Callie Wilson. The senior was a double-winner in both hurdles — crossing the 100 hurdles finish line in 14.70 seconds; and the 300 hurdles finish line in 45.04 seconds.

College baseball

Landon Webb (Richland/Columbia Basin College) picked up his first victory of the season pitching for Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday, April 12, in an 11-1 win over College of Idaho.

Webb started for the Warriors and went 4 innings, walking four batters and striking out one. But he surrendered only one run and just one hit.

Pitchers Jake Schumacher (Kamiakin) and Carson Jones (Walla Walla), as well as outfielder Isaac Hoag (Chiawana) are members of the Saint Martin’s University baseball team this spring.

Unfortunately, the Saints have a 1-34 overall record, and are 1-18 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Schumacher has made seven starts, and struck out 19 batters in 34 innings.

Hoag has 7 RBIs and 6 stolen bases for SMU.

Motorsports

Zach Riehl of Troutdale, Ore., took the lead with two laps remaining to win the 56th annual Apple Cup at Tri-City Raceway at Red Mountain Event Center in West Richland on April 6.

Riehl drove his Northwest Super Late Model past Quincy’s Kasey Kleyn — who finished second — for the victory.

Richland’s Trace Thompson finished third in the race.

College track and field

Walla Walla High School graduate Dash Sirmon placed second in the men’s javelin in a track and field meet at Texas A&M on April 12.

Sirmon tossed the javelin in 250 feet, 6 inches.

Currently, Sirmon ranks fourth in the nation with a best throw of 256 feet, 9 inches.
