Burbank, Prosser boys to battle for WA state high school basketball championships

The Columbia-Burbank and Prosser boys will get their shot to win state high school basketball titles on Saturday, as both teams won their respective state semifinal contests on Friday.

For Todd Schumacher’s Burbank Coyotes, getting to the boys 2B state finals for the second consecutive year was no easy task.

Schumacher’s top-ranked squad had to fend off Colfax, winning 59-56 in a rematch from last year’s state championship game.

“After the game I told the guys actually the same thing (Thursday) before the game. We only need to win by 1,” said Schumacher. “There are not beauty points or rankings due to how you win in March.”

The top-seeded Coyotes will play No. 2 Freeman in the state finals at 9 p.m. Saturday in the Spokane Arena.

Meanwhile, Toby Cox led his Prosser boys past league-rival Selah 67-61 in a packed Yakima Valley SunDome semifinal game at the 2A boys tournament.

The 10th-seeded Mustangs will take on No. 3 Bremerton in the 2A state championship game at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Burbank’s Quincy Scott had the game-high score, going 12 for 22 from the floor (6 of 12 from the 3-point line) and finishing with 35 points.

With the game close at halftime — Burbank leading 24-22 — the Coyotes exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 23-10 for a 47-32 lead.

But Colfax wasn’t done, outscoring Burbank 24-12 in the final quarter, and just falling short.

“They shot better in the fourth and we missed six straight free throws,” said Schumacher. “We didn’t handle their physical play in the full curt, and then didn’t make them pay when they fouled.”

The Coyotes took advantage of forcing Colfax into 18 turnovers and turning them into 19 points.

Tristan Frimodt added 14 points and 5 rebounds for Burbank.

But it was Scott who made the difference.

“Quincy made some huge baskets and put so much pressure on their defense that it creates opportunities for others,” said Schumacher. “But tonight, he had to sort of take over to finish this one. He wanted this game for a year. He told the locker room we waited a year to play Colfax again. He delivered.”

Jayce Kelly led Colfax with 30 points.

Meanwhile, Tri-Cities Prep saw its season end, losing 54-51 to Northwest Christian of Colbert in a loser-out game on Friday.
