Spring sports recap: Unbeaten Richland dominates MCC all-conference baseball team

As expected, when you go 27-0 and win the Class 4A state baseball championship, your team should dominate the all-conference team.

For Richland, that’s what happened last month when the Mid-Columbia Conference all-conference baseball team was released.

The Bombers won all three major awards — Dallas Bennett as Player of the Year, Alec Ammerman as Pitcher of the Year, and Grant Richardson as Coach of the Year.

Bennett, a senior, was named to the first team as both a first baseman and pitcher.

Ammerman, also a senior, was named to the first team as a pitcher.

Other Richland first teamers were sophomore Hayden Galloway at catcher, senior John Corbin at utility, and senior Chris Daniels as a relief pitcher.

Kamiakin had three players on the first team: sophomore Taron Carlson at second base, senior Talon Thai at shortstop, and junior Trent Woodhouse as both an outfielder and a relief pitcher.

Kennewick senior Conner Salisbury made the squad at third base, while Lions junior Dane Chavez made it as a shortstop.

Two Chiawana seniors were named first-team all-stars: outfielder Rylen Blair, and designated hitter Jaxson Baxter.

Southridge senior Austin Guier (outfield) and Hanford senior Collin Dorsett (DH) also were named to the first team.

Boys track and field

Kamiakin senior Gavyn Buchanan was named the Mid-Columbia Conference boys Field Athlete of the Year by conference track and field athlete last month.

Chiawana senior Justin Webber was named Track Athlete of the Year, and Kamiakin’s Kyle Schauble was the MCC Boys Coach of the Year.

Buchanan was the first-team long jumper, while Webber was first team at 100 meters.

Four athletes were named first team in two events each: Kennewick senior Jackson Burns (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Southridge senior Carson Condie (discus, shot put), Kamiakin junior Ezra Teeples (1600, 3200), and Kennewick junior Shaun Youngblood (high jump, triple jump).

Richland’s 4x100 relay team of Jalen Brightful, Jack Forbes, Levi Stiver and Brayden Pratt earned top honors in their event.

Hanford’s Grayson Jones, Ethan Brogoitti, Modou Kinteh and East Woods were named first team for the 4x400 relay.

The Falcons’ Woods, a junior, was also first team in the 400 meters.

Other members of the first team are Chiawana junior Braxton Feldman (javelin), Hermiston junior Jaysen Rodriguez (800), Kamiakin senior Camden Schmidt (200), and Hanford senior Phillip Wald (pole vault).

Pasco, which finished fourth in the 4A state tournament, dominated the Mid-Columbia Conference boys all-conference team that was released in May.

MCC coaches voted Bulldogs senior forward Julio Andrade as Player of the Year.

Hermiston’s Ricardo Sotelo was named MCC Coach of the Year.

Joining Andrade on the MCC’s first team are Pasco teammates Chase Potter, a senior midfielder; Bryan Martinez, another senior midfielder; Juan Chavez, a third senior midfielder; junior defender Tyler Axel; and senior defender Vincente Garcia.

Chiawana — the MCC co-champion along with Pasco — had three players on the first team.

They are senior midfielder Humberto Cervantes, senior defender Alfredo Jimenez, and sophomore midfielder Eli Sanchez.

Richland had two first-team representatives, both seniors: forward Owen Jackson and defender Dylan Peart.

Three schools each had one player on the first team: Kennewick senior forward Layton Brooks, Hermiston junior midfielder Angel Cadenas Garcia, and Hanford senior goalkeeper Aaron Lowry.

Prep tennis

Richland senior Matt Morrison was named the Player of the Year by the Mid-Columbia Conference boys tennis coaches in May.

Hanford’s Craig Klatt was named MCC Coach of the Year.

Joining Morrison on the first team were two of his Bombers teammates, sophomores Zohair Ariz and Soban Malik.

Kamiakin had two players on the first team in Maxwell Clary and William Stratton; while Walla Walla senior Ken Higgins and Hanford junior Adam Tan were also on the team.

Hanford dominated the Mid-Columbia Conference girls tennis all-conference team, which was voted upon by MCC coaches in May.

The Falcons snared the two major awards, with sophomore Lily Deng being named MCC Player of the Year, and Evan Woodward winning the MCC Coach of the Year honors.

Joining Deng on the first team are Hanford teammates and juniors Nikki Reyes and Jojo Safranski.

Kamiakin had a trio on the first team: senior Reese Clark, junior Kennedy Rose, and senior Annie Tran.

Southridge senior Courtney Tran rounded out the MCC’s first team.
