This former Connell javelin thrower is now one of the best at BYU

BYU freshman Ashton Riner threw 167 feet, 1 inch Friday to place seventh at the 24th annual Beach Invitational at Long Beach State

The throw was a personal best for the 2017 Connell graduate, and ranks fourth all-time in the BYU record books. The top mark of 175-5 was set by Lindsey Johnson in May 2002.

Alyssa Olin of North Dakota State won the Beach Invite with a toss of 188-1

Riner, who already has qualified for the NCAA West Regionals next month, is ranked 17th in the nation.

The school record holder (156-7 1/2) at Connell High School, Riner twice won the Pasco Invite, and won the 1A state title in 2017.
