Letter: Proposed changes to Howard Amon Park would be dreadful

I just learned that Richland is planning for changes to Howard Amon Park — to remove 25 riverfront trees, widen the river footpath, and build a 15-foot-wide walk with electric lighting! What a dreadful proposal.

The worst loss is the 25 mature trees, which give us so much needed shade and ambiance at the river’s edge.

But, also think of the very large cost of making those misguided changes. My guess is a hundred thousand dollars or more. Has anyone had one tree removed lately?

Then think of the cost to add lighting, plus the cost of wasted energy, ad infinitum.

As for the path, why tear up a good path to make a road? A footpath is appropriate and comfortable there.

Transformation from beautiful and peaceful to harsh and ugly, from shady and relaxed to paved pedestrian, would be unthinkable damage to our park.

If we have money to burn, why not increase the function and attractiveness of the rest of the miles of riverfront? Plant more trees. Money, to improve and extend our park accommodations, would be well spent. “If you build it, they will come.”

Quick, tell Richland Parks what you think!
