Letter: Republicans trying to eliminate any opposition to their ideology

I fear for my country. The Republican party can’t win a presidential election because of their platform and their candidates’ positions on issues. So rather than allow, or abide by fair elections, they concentrate their energy and resources trying to disqualify opposition party nominees or attempting to remove an elected president from office.

In 1999, the Republican-controlled Congress attempted to remove the Democratic president by impeachment. In 2000, Republicans interfered with a vote recount in a close election, and the Republican-controlled Supreme Court intervened to appoint a Republican president. In 2004, Republicans, who claim to have great respect for the military, not only openly mocked, but actually denied the combat service and sacrifice of the Democratic nominee.

In 2008, Republicans tried to disqualify the Democratic nominee by claiming he wasn’t born in the United States, and since his election have called for his impeachment on numerous occasions. Now, assisted by the Republican-controlled Congress using taxpayer dollars to actively campaign against her, Republicans are again attempting to disqualify the presumptive Democratic nominee.

This isn’t just hard-fought politics. Our country is in grave danger because Republicans won’t stop until they’ve achieved a dictatorship by eliminating any opposition to their ideology.
