Letter: Inconvenience to boat owners shouldn’t stop breach of Bateman Island causeway

I just have some comments on Darrel Puls’ letter (TCH, July 10) about how the increased current will inconvenience the large boat owners at the marina downstream from the causeway.

First, I don’t think that the inconvenience to a few boat owners and the marina in general is a reason to stop a project that will benefit the Yakima River watershed, salmon recovery efforts and thousands of fishermen.

Second, I think that probably the owners of 30-plus-foot boats and the marina are not in the lowest quartile of the economic spectrum. Perhaps they could get together and fund the needed changes to the marina to accommodate the breach and additional current.

Two ideas to consider are a breakwater structure or reconfiguring the marina so that boats are not entering a narrow channel crossways to the current. Things change and you just have to adapt.
