Letter: Trump proposal on Muslims suggests viable approach to income inequity

Without realizing it, Donald Trump may have hit upon a very good idea. His crazy proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the United States “until we figure out what the hell is going on” actually suggests a viable approach to solving genuine problems.

America’s most important economic problem, in this era of automation and globalization, is income inequity between the 1 percent and the 99 percent. Trump’s promise to be “the greatest job creator in history” is based upon ending free trade and the Republican myth that if you cut taxes to the wealthy, they will invest their new wealth and spur growth that will create jobs. Hasn’t worked before, and won’t work if we try it again.

But let’s apply that Trump concept to America’s most important economic problem and introduce a guaranteed household income for every family in America. Coal miners in West Virginia and factory workers throughout the Rust Belt shouldn’t have to struggle for years until (or if) Trump's unlikely “solution” actually works to recover from their current distress.

A radical, family-stabilizing solution “until we figure out what the hell is going on?” Sounds like a good idea. Thank you, Donald.
