Letter: Keep the flame of freedom burning for future generations

As the last fireworks fade on this Fourth of July, I wonder if “we the people” can keep the flame of freedom burning for future generations.

America came into being not through ethnic or tribal groups, but by a belief that we could be self-governing. The creators of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence understood that freedom from tyrants and monarchies would endure only if “we the people” were moral and virtuous. Freedom demands virtue, virtue is inextricably bonded to faith, and faith to religion.

Unfortunately, our government, state and federal, has surreptitiously subtracted God and prayer from schools and offices. Is it any wonder then that we lack faith in our leaders? If we cannot maintain the bonds between freedom, virtue and faith, we will inevitably extinguish our flame of freedom. Without it, we cannot light the candles of freedom that are held expectantly in the hands of our children and grandchildren.

Take a breath, not to snuff out your candle, but to speak out and demand virtue and faith from our government and to ensure that the flame of freedom continues to light our skies, for us, for tomorrow, for America.
