Letter: What’s the meaning of the word ‘conservative’ nowadays?

My schooling was through high school, so I hope you’ll pardon my way of reasoning. Me and my big dictionary.

I looked up the word “conservative”, just out of curiosity. Well, sure enough, 1.a says “an adherent or advocate of political conservatism.” Also, 2.a says “one who adheres to traditional methods or views.” 2.b, “a cautious or discreet person.”

Well, I kind of thought one of the meanings of conservative could be the word “sensible.” So I looked up the word — nope, conservative as I thought, wasn’t there.

But one word sort of stood out ... substantial. So I was wrong. But “cautious and sensible” are both sort of gone these days. Actually, maybe I was just part wrong.

Just a matter of opinion, right? I guess we’ll find out soon enough, but we can only hope and pray for our great country!
