Letter: Re-elect Alex Ekstrom to Benton-Franklin Superior Court
I urge my fellow citizens to re-elect Judge Alex Ekstrom to Benton-Franklin Superior Court position no. 3.
I have practiced law for more than 38 years. I have lived and practiced in the Tri-Cities for 36 years. I have appeared before Judge Ekstrom in court and find him to be prepared and intelligent. His courtroom demeanor defines appropriate judicial temperament.
Let’s be honest about this election. Judge Ekstrom is being challenged due to the ruling he made in the Arlene’s Flowers case. I was unsure of what the appropriate ruling should be until I read the decision. When I finished reading, I was convinced that Judge Ekstrom had no choice, but to rule as he did.
I do not know Judge Ekstrom’s political views. I have not asked him, as his is a non-partisan office. He must follow the law, whether it fits his personal politics or not. A judicial candidate who aspires to make law should run for the legislature.
If you think Judge Ekstrom ruled incorrectly, I invite you to read his memorandum decision. It is thoughtful and thorough and extends to 60 pages. You may find it at documents.latimes.com/arlenes-flowers-judgment
