Letter: Editorial on bathroom issues distorted one fact, left out others
Your May 27 editorial, “Linking Hanford funding to bathroom issues nonsensical,” regarding the failure of Congress to pass a bill that included Hanford funding, distorted one fact and left out others.
The fatal amendment, proposed by Democrats, was not, as you imply, to strengthen the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people across the board, but to prevent discrimination against them in government contracts. Additionally, you withheld any information about the Republican amendments regarding North Carolina bathrooms and the Iranian nuclear deal. Why did the TCH fail to explain what Republicans wanted regarding these two issues?
The uproar created by these amendments, however, served its purpose by deflecting attention from some real issues. This bill cuts $248 million from renewable energy programs while increasing fossil fuel research and development by $13 million. Perhaps your next editorial could address the problem of certain members of our Congress being bought and paid for by the fossil fuel industry.
