Letter: Bicyclists disappointed in poorly marked trails

In response to a recent news report on Kennewick police possibly distributing tickets to bikers not using the same rules as vehicles, it is a perfect time to share our disappointment of the lack of maintenance on our area bike paths and street shoulders.

Many people are training for the STP 220-mile bike event in July, and we are putting many miles on these streets every week! Last weekend we started from my home in Hansen Park on to Benton City, through West Richland into Richland, over the bridge into Pasco to Sacajawea Park, back across into Kennewick and home for 75 miles.

I will tell you there must be bicyclists on the city committees of Pasco because they excel on all levels of keeping the paths marked, painted and labeled clearly. Richland is by far the worst — there are so many opportunities for beautiful rides, but you can barely see the paint/markers/signs. They look like they haven’t been touched in years. West Richland is trying but they have so many back roads. Kennewick, you’re a disappointing second-worse.

Well cities, you have until late June to step it up and help us be safe.

Janet Karback, Kennewick
