Letter: How to correctly fly the U.S. flag

June 14th is Flag Day. It is heartwarming to see our great nation’s symbol flown at many locations. But some are not displayed as prescribed in the U.S. Code, and I know our citizens want to do it correctly.

A few pointers: If flown with another flag on staffs, our flag should be to the flag’s right (viewer’s left) and on the right side of a vehicle. The blue field is the main part of the flag, so if displayed against a wall it should be at the top and at the flag’s right (viewer’s left). In a flag decal on the side of a vehicle the field should be forward. This may require cutting the decal. If flown at night the flag is to be illuminated. A worn flag should be destroyed by respective burning.
