Letter: Socialism is a step toward American ideal of equality

In this 2016 election. the word “socialist” is a very large topic that is discussed negatively. To most, socialism is the government ownership of business, but the key word is “Democratic,” which is much less radical.

Democratic Socialism confronts and supports issues such as a generous welfare state, giving workers a better way of life, and limiting the influence of money on politics. Sanders is an avowed Democratic Socialist, the only politician brave enough to use the “s” word.

Before, Lyndon B. Johnson introduced the Great Society and the War on Poverty in the 1960s, both government actions to give Americans health care and confront civil rights. Bernie is for the same, his ideas are nothing new compared to the past presidents America has had. Universal health care, a veterans health system, environmental control and breaking up big banks (hopefully to prevent another 2008).

America is already half socialist. Food stamps, school breakfasts, job corporations, Social Security, police and fire departments, Medicare, the military, and every single road or highway you drive on are socialist programs or creations.

Democratic Socialism isn’t a step toward Godless Communism, but quite the opposite. It’s a step closer to the American ideal of equality.
