Letter: Public wants less taxes and government to wield less power
John Faulkner (TCH, May 6) repeatedly says we lack understanding of the Constitution, and have strayed from it.
Unfortunately, he’s not very explicit on what we don’t know, and how we strayed. In general, I agree those in power (politicians) always want more (power and wealth). I would add that the public always wants … less taxes, and government to wield less power over them.
He says “we” Bernie supporters want “free stuff.” (Don’t we all?) But, I also agree, it really isn’t free. However, we are “entitled” to it. I am also entitled to everything my wife (or I) buy with either cash or on credit. And I do not whine when the bills come due. And if she spent like a drunken sailor, I'd consider getting a new wife.
Public schools, law enforcement, the military, roads and highways for me, are valid things to spend money on (forms of Democratic Socialism). But, there are also some things I think should be discarded.
John also says, “You won’t obtain rich people’s wealth.” For now, I agree. Particularly with the number of hidden accounts, shell corporations (Panama, Cayman Islands, Wyoming/Delaware, etc.) loopholes, tax havens and corporate welfare. But there’s always tomorrow, and November.
