Letter: South Kennewick lacks traffic enforcement on long, straight streets
It was sad to read about the recent horrific accident at 36th and Vancouver (TCH, May 2), but for those of us who live in the Badlands (my term for South Kennewick east of Ely) it should be no surprise.
With the long straight streets and lack of police patrols on them, it is inevitable that those prone to speed will take advantage of the lack of enforcement in the area. Almost nightly we hear motorcycles attempting to break the sound barrier, hot rods speeding about with muffler cutouts wide open, and Harleys obviously speeding off (we can hear them clear to 27th). By the time police are called, the miscreants have long departed.
Before the summer arrives, I hope the police department takes note and begins patrolling these long straight raceways, or there are inevitably going to be more tragic accidents, and now they can’t say they weren’t alerted to the situation.
