Letter: Love columnist’s suggestion to take new pledge of allegiance to all humanity

I couldn’t agree more with Allen Johnson’s guest column on “Nationalism is the final idolatry” (TCH, May 1). I thought it was very relevant in light of all the vitriol of this year’s national political climate. The quote from Hitler showed how some potential leaders for our country these days are using patriotism, and especially nationalism, for nefarious purposes.

Jingoism is a word not used often these days, but Johnson shows how it’s growing in our nation at a dangerous pace. The quote from John Dunne (”No man is an island”) clearly shows that we must not withdraw into shells of of “us versus them” thinking.

I love Johnson’s suggestion that we take a new pledge of allegiance to all humanity. There’s no escaping our contentedness with everyone else in the world.
