Letter: New way to help prevent drug addiction

Regarding your March 30 article “Addiction sweeps through Northwest,” I’m thankful Obama and Congress want to spend more on drug addiction treatment. But wouldn’t it also be good to try to prevent drug addiction in the first place?

Our son is a doctor in Colorado and has been very concerned about this problem for years. He attended a National Prescription Drug Abuse Summit to promote inexpensive locking prescription drug containers that he has developed. Hopefully these will become available so that children or teens (anyone) can’t steal their parents’ or grandparents’ prescriptions.

Yes, they could still steal the whole bottle and break it open, but then the missing drugs would be noticed and they’d be caught and stopped. The locking caps would prevent the theft of small amounts that lead to addiction.
