Letter: Republicans cross a line with Supreme Court obstructionism
The Republican Party’s announcement that they would suspend the U.S. Constitution to block Obama from appointing a Supreme Court judge tells the world that we are no longer a democracy, bound by a Constitution. Republicans may cry “But it is just one judge,” but this is a very red line they have crossed. Whether they succeed in their aim is not the point.
The American public has been ill-served by Republican obstructionism. Many, if not most of Obama’s appointments were delayed extraordinarily or completely blocked.
How could things be better? We could hold more respect in the world if we were to close Guantanamo. We would have a better economy if we raised the minimum wage. We would have better-functioning government if appointments got promptly filled. We would have more programs that build our economy, such as infrastructure renovation and improvement. We would have affordable health care. We would have less war.
These goals are not achievable with today’s Republicans in office. Let’s give them a “time out” for a few years, to let them sort out their disconnect with mainstream American voters. They feed on your fear. Fear them instead!
