Letter: We need candidates who aspire to wholesome values and preservation of good

Meditate upon the country, through the shortest passage in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” (John, 11:35). It was an utterance by some members of my Kentucky families, and for them it meant a sort of epiphany, in terms of world view — “how thus has it come to this!”

We are coming to an election year, with very likely two hugely unusual candidates.

I have two spaniels, a female and a male. I would prefer to write in either one of them before either of the two who may appear on the ballot. My friends and guardians each are kind of heart, and loyal of disposition. Neither is prone to bad-mouth their fellows, although they are very conscious of coyotes, reprobates, and brigands.

While we anoint felons and demonize police, these spaniels in their faithfulness aspire to wholesome values and preservation of good. Otherwise it is as Thornton Wilder said: “Ninety-nine percent of the people in the world are fools and the rest of us are in great danger of contagion.”

If you are inclined to throw either of my two good candidates a vote, their names are Freckles and Hunter. They would make dandy president and vice president, in either order.
