Letter: Let women volunteer for military service, not register for draft

Now that combat roles will be offered to women, congressmen and presidential candidates are asked whether or not we should put women into the draft. As if every woman of the United States desires to enter a war or serve in the military.

Throughout history women have worked their way to ensure that they have equal opportunity to serve as men do, and this is the right course of history. However, do we, in an effort to ensure equality, force others who want nothing to do with combat or war, sign up for something they do not desire equality in? Shouldn’t we rather allow women to volunteer in the time of war, on an as-needed basis?

We didn’t need to draft women in Vietnam and in World War II, women steadily volunteered to work in our factories, became nurses and raised the children of the nation while our soldiers fought bravely in the war.

I do not believe women should be “required” to register for the draft; how about we let them volunteer for the draft.
