Letter: Don’t fill in the Pit in Richland — use it for wine cellars
Regarding the Pit in Richland — don’t fill it in! Think about a lower level with wine cellars! That should fit in well with the market theme that is being promoted for the Pit.
In the winter, the ground temperature will give a natural cooling in the mid-50s range. In the summer a still-cool high 60s. I am speaking from some experience as I recently had a nicely decorated large wine cellar installed in my home in Pasco. I used cedar lattice extensively for wall coverings and wine racks.
Everyone loved going down and checking it out! And it was a fun place to spend some time.
There should be some wineries in the area that would like the idea of a downtown location to share and promote their wines, much like is done over in Walla Walla. Downtown Walla Walla is a true wine tasting destination!
With the Pit location, the wineries could be either underground or have a cellar under their main location on the ground floor! Having a lower level will increase the usage area significantly. And it could retain its crafty name — The Pit!
