Letter: Destruction of representative democracy is more likely to come from left

As usual, Mark Mansperger has twisted the truth in his Jan. 31 opinion piece, “Fascism threatens America.”

The so-called “Business Plot,” the attempted fascist coup that Mansperger mentions, was widely dismissed as a hoax.

What Reagan did was, by and large, successful. Many (real 40 hour a week!) jobs were created. Tax revenues increased even with the tax cuts.

Neo-fascism has yet to be adequately defined, if it exists at all, and is primarily used by those on the left as an insult against those with whom they disagree, such as the opprobrium Mansperger levels against Reagan. So Mansperger can advance any bogus definition he wants.

Government elitism and failure to compromise by those in power is a trait of the left just as much as of the right. You can plainly see it in the current administration with its limitless government, limitless regulation, more taxation, “share the wealth” philosophy.

Finally, with respects to Sinclair Lewis, he was writing of a different time. Today, the destruction of our representative democracy is far more likely to come from the left than the right.
